Heartland Humor

A while back, after Kansas School Board Chair Steve Abrams and Department of Education spokesman David Awbrey poo pooed the idea that the board's new science standards might somehow hurt the state's image or prospects for economic development, RSR ran its "Heartland Humor Contest."

We wanted to take a lighthearted look at how Kansas is now viewed from afar.

Most of the entries came in the comments to the post, but here's one we liked that came in via e-mail from Jokermage: "Oz at least had a Wizard. All Kansas seems to have is Scarecrows."

Our favorite, though, came from CSA, a passionate supporter of science education who lives and teaches in Kansas. CSA proves that only those from Kansan can truly see the humor in our current situation. She wrote, in a beautiful bit of ironic understatement: "Kansas. Where the world IS flat."
