Supporters of teaching REAL science in public schools should take MSNBC's live survey on what should be taught -- evolution or intelligent design. Here's the
link. Let 'em know what you think. At the time of this post, Evolution is leading 56-44% out of 61,147 response. The survey is not scientific, of course, but it is significant.
We're leading but the yahoos are sure as hell beating the spread.
ReplyDeleteDo they have idiotic "debates" like this in heathen lands where the kids learn real science and will soon grow up to eat our lunch?
"education should reflect widespread beliefs"
ReplyDeleteAs opposed to facts?
The MSNBC survey fundamentally misrepresents the problem.
ReplyDelete"Should public schools teach students about counterarguments to the theory of evolution?"
The two available choices are:
"Yes; many Americans doubt evolution, and education should reflect widespread beliefs."
and
"No; evolution is a well-established scientific principle."
Science is all about presenting various counterarguments and letting them work out their differences. The poll is obviously set up so that "science" is made to appear to be a monolithic, unarguable, unchanging dictator, and not a method of understanding the world through critical investigation.
The right answer to the question isn't an option in the poll: "Counterarguments to evolution based on confirmable observations certainly should be presented in schools."
Evolution is a well-established fact, but this must not rule out discussion of serious counterarguments: that would be tantamount to stifling democracy. The REAL problem is that the flat-earthers are trying to prevent evolution from being taught in schools.
Of course, wonderful phrasing there after the 'yes' and 'no' answers.
ReplyDelete...Becuase the scientific answer to the question is obviously 'yes! alternatives should be looked at.' but not 'yes, people are ignorant and reality shouldn't matter.'
What scum.
