Phill Kline: Collapse of the Tinfoil Market

Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline is seeking re-election. Normally, incumbents are next to impossible to dislodge from office. But, many Kansans believe Kline has abused his authority while in office by attempting to obtain abortion-clinic medical records in order to pursue his own radical anti-abortion agenda. Now Kline finds himself in the fight of his political life.

Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison, who is running against Kline, says he would never issue "a mass number of subpoenas so I could fish around though somebody's private medical records to see what I could find."

A Wichita Eagle-KWCH 12 Eyewitness News poll shows Kline and Morrison in a virtual dead heat. While the survey shows Kline edging Morrison 51 percent to 48 percent, the result are well within the poll's 4.1-point margin of error.

One reason many Kansans contemplate removing Kline from office can be found in an interview he gave to WorldNetDaily, an ultra-right web-based publication whose readership is acutely interested in items such as NukAlert, a "patented personal radiation detector and alarm small enough to attach to a key chain." We hear sales of tinfoil dropped off dramatically once the NukAlert went on sale to the public.

"We've got them on the hill they will die on," Kline says of Planned Parenthood. "They are defending abortion clinics as safe havens for child rapists."
