Kansas School Board to Hear Blue Valley Book Policy

Blue Valley School District Superintendent Tom Triggs will defend the district's book selection policy at the Kansas State School Board meeting in Topeka today.

At issue are Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon and Pat Conroy's Lords of Discipline.

The right-wing majority that runs the state board wants to "teach the controversy" over evolution, but it wants to prevent students from reading challenging -- award winning -- literature because it has some naughty words in it.

Each of the books was approved following a lengthy process that involved students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
