Oklahomans Circulate Online Petition to Defend Science Education

The Oklahoma Academy of Science, Oklahomans for Excellence in Science Education, Oklahoma Mainstream Baptists, OK Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, Tulsa and OKC Interfaith Alliances, and representatives from several Oklahoma colleges are circulating an online petition to oppose House bills 2107, 2526, Senate bill 1959.

Each of these bills -- one measure sponsored by state Rep. Sally Kern passed the House yesterday 77-10 --are thinly veiled creationist and intelligent design inspired attempts to weaken science teaching in Oklahoma.

Kern claims her "bill is not about a belief in God. It is not about religion. It is about science," but statements by other supporters of the legislation reveal a less than balanced approach is what they envision for Oklahoma science classes:
"Do you think you come from a monkeyman?" said Rep. Tad Jones, R-Claremore. "Did we come from slimy algae 4.5 billion years ago or are we a unique creation of God? I think it's going to be exciting for students to discuss these issues."

Here's the link to the petition.
