North Carolina's Unconventional Wisdom

North Carolina may well be, as Sen. Elizabeth Dole would have it, "the buckle on the Bible Belt." Even so, the state once represented by Jesse Helms has not proven itself particularly hospitable to the social agenda of the religious right.

During the the 1920s Darwin's theory of evolution was banned in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee, site of the famous Scopes trial, but not in North Carolina.
