Steve Abrams: Kansas' Mother Teresa

''This is not aimed at just private schools, to help the rich get richer. This is aimed at the at-risk and poorer families. They are the ones who need the opportunity,'' says Kansas State Board of Education Chair Steve Abrams of his proposed school voucher program.

It is not well known out of state, but around Kansas, Abrams has long been known as the Mother Teresa of state education for his deep and abiding commitment to teach the poor about the controversy over evolution.

Those cynics who insist the board's change of heart may have something to do with the widespread unpopularity of the voucher proposal and the upcoming election for seats on the board of education are simply bad, bad people.

Word is, the charter school proposal may go ahead next week when the board meets in Topeka.
