ID Bills Die in Maryland Legislature

Red State Rabble reader MD writes to say that the final day of the Maryland General Assembly Session was April 10. The second of two House bills regarding the teaching of Intelligent Design received an unfavorable hearing, and both bills are now dead.

HB 1531 would have provided teachers with "Academic Freedom" to teach Creationism as if it were science, and present it in any class. HB 1228 would have prohibited teaching ID in science class, but would have allowed the same material, taught as if it were scientifically valid, to be taught in humanities or philosophy classes.

Perhaps, says MD, the House Ways and Means Committee heard of the case in California where Creationists tried to outflank the Constitution by teaching ID in a class labeled "philosophy."
