Teach the Controversy, Unless...

The same ultra-right majority on the Kansas school board that voted to "teach the controversy" over evolution last November, has apparently decided that teaching students about how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted disease is just too controversial.

The board voted 6-4 yesterday to require school districts to obtain written permission from parents before enrolling children in sex education courses. Previously, most districts assumed a child would be enrolled in sex education unless a parent objected in writing.

Kathy Martin, R-Clay Center, says she wants to consider going even further and mandate abstinence-only courses.
