Republican to Challenge Van Meter
According to the Parsons Sun (no pun intended) Jana Shaver, a retired Independence teacher, has announced her candidacy for the 9th District State Board of Education seat. She will run against Iris Van Meter, a conservative who voted to re-define science in Kansas.
Shaver is running as a Republican in the primary election scheduled for Aug. 1
"I do not see religion and science as mutually exclusive," Shaver says. "I am a Christian, but I still have curiosity about the natural world and theories of science. As a Christian I think that you can believe in evolution."
Dr. Kent Runyan, an education professor at Pittsburg State University, previously announced he will run as a Democrat and challenge Republican Van Meter in the general election next November.
